Syria is a known terrorist state with. We now know that the shadow government that runs America and the West is actively supporting Hezbollah and Hamas and various factions of Islam. What does the Bible say about Syria? Will Damascus, Earth's oldest inhabited city, be destroyed? At present, the city looks very ruinous as a result of the last few years of fighting and bombing. But will Damascus suffer a more rapid and catastrophic destruction than what is going on there right now?
One of the most readily understood prophecies in all of scripture has to do with Syria in the last days, specifically with it's capital, the city of Damascus. Because it so easily conforms to what we imagine might be a nuclear conflagration, it has long attracted the attention of prophecy students. The ancient city of Damascus is now a thriving metropolis. It is the home of the University of Damascus, the Central Bank of Syria, the Olympic Stadium and numerous theatres and museums. The heart of Damascus is the Old City. It features the Damascus Citadel and the famed Umayyad Mosque, which was once a Roman Temple of Jupiter. Even under Islamic rule, the ancient heart of the city remains divided into four quarters: The Old City, Muslim, Jewish and Christian Quarters. The latter two are bisected by the East-West "street which is called Straight" (Acts: 9:11), where the Apostle Paul stayed after his meeting with the risen Christ. This famous thoroughfare is still in constant use. Since before the time of Abraham, Damascus has been an important city. It lies on the ancient trade route of the fertile crescent that leads from the Persian Gulf to Israel. During it's entire history, it has never been destroyed in the way Isaiah's prophecy describes:
"The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid. The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus, and the remnant of Syria: they shall be as the glory of the children of Israel, saith the Lord of hosts. And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean" (Isaiah 17:1-4 This amazing prophecy chronicles the total destruction of an ancient city. Today, this city is headquarters to a number of terrorist groups. It is or was the leading center of the Baath Party, the political group with numerous ties to the Socialist parties of Europe and Russia. It's southwest border on the Golan heights would be the jumping-off place for an incursion into Israel. In fact, Israel's leaders have long viewed the Syrians and their Hezbollah clients in Lebanon as their major enemies. Doubtless, their war plans have laid out every possible scenario to cover a major invasion. The Israelis, of course, have the nuclear option, and have said that they would use it in case Syria launched an attack across the Jordan River valley. Isaiah's prophecy also mentions "the cities of Aroer." This would be the territory along the Jordan's East Bank, extending down through Amman, the capital of Jordan. So, the area covered in this cataclysm is broad in scale and deep in destruction. The prophecy hasn't yet happened, but it's coming is sure. Scripture ties this event to others in the same time period. Of course, the destruction of Damascus will be one of the judgments of the fast approaching seven years of judgment upon Earth known as the Tribulation period. The context seems to place this event early in that period. This is but one of the many prophecies that include the territory of modern Syria.
