Jesus Christ came to earth for the purpose of taking our punishment for sin. Instead of a throne, he chose a cross. In place of a king's crown, he chose to wear a wreath of thorns. The significance of those thorns has often been overlooked. The theme of the thorns goes back to the fall of Adam and continues throughout the Old Testament. They become highly significant in the crown of thorns that was placed upon the head of Jesus at his crucifixion.
