The story I eventually chose is that Kirito is blindly living his life in "Sword Art Online," an MMORPG, and does not remember his real life until one day, in an ambush, his wife Asuna is killed. Suddenly, he is filled by memories of his life outside of SAO, and of his wife Asuna. Resolved, Kirito discovers a path to exit SAO and be reunited with Asuna.
