Check out this sweet track we had set up at our last mid-week racing event! I was flying a Mobula6, which is a great 1S whoop. In fact, it would be nearly perfect except for one problem. Read on if you are interested in my thoughts on it...
Build Info:
- Happymodel Mobula6 25,000KV Race FrSky (Heli-Nation: bit.ly/2TSS9WX, Banggood: bit.ly/2wGRtw7)
- Gemfan 4-blade props (bit.ly/39G1atc)
- RDQ 250mAh HV 1S batteries (bit.ly/39PrTmY)
- Throttle scaled to 80% for this race.
- JESC 2.3 48kHz ESC firmware (bit.ly/39Iye3C)
- Betaflight 3.5.7 with my custom tune (bit.ly/2H4wFR3)
My Mini Review:
I'm not going to make a full review video because guys like Nick Burns have already done such a great job covering it. The Mobula6 is super popular, and for good reason. The specs are great, and it flies great, but there is one problem that I've been having. I haven't heard many people talk about it, so I thought I'd bring it up. The problem is range.
In this video you can see how I took off from one room and flew to the next. With that short distance, my radio was warnings me about "TELEMETRY LOST". That's not good! I had to move myself so that I was sitting in the same room as the gates in order to have a reliable link. Now, the range of these boards appears to be pretty inconsistent. Some people have had much better luck. For example, Nick made a vide where he flew around the back side of his neighbor's house. Impressive! So, the range can definitely be better than mine... but it can also be worse. I have a 2nd whoop that I built using the same Crazybee F4 Lite 1S flight controller, and the range on that one is totally unusable. It would literally fall out of the air 30 feet away! I have some guesses about why the range might be so bad, but I don't have enough data to present a full solution. I replaced both antennas and made it better, but still not reliable. I can feel momentary drops-outs even when flying in my house. I have never had such problems with my older Crazybee flight controllers (1S or 2S) nor with my BETAFPV flight controllers. So... should the range issues stop you from buying a Mobula6? Not necessarily. It's a fantastic product when it works right. I just suggest you buy it from somewhere with a good return policy, in case your luck is as bad as mine.
Other than the range, everything else is great. It's light weight (which is the #1 most important factor in the performance of a whoop), it has fast smooth motors, plug-n-play connectors, and a great camera with adjustable tilt! If you haven't tried 48kHz JESC, then that's a must! Also, the Mobula6 comes with 300mah 1S batteries, but it feels WAY lighter with the 250mAh packs I've been flying. Thanks to JESC, even small batteries can provide enough flight time for me.
