At UC Davis School of Medicine's commencement this past weekend, Habib Salamah surprised the crowd with a moment no one saw coming. When his name was called, he walked across the stage alongside three people who mean the most to him: his partner Alaa’i Alshabrawy, his big sister and their 8-year-old brother, whom they helped raise after their mom died.
After being hooded, the group paused for photos and made their way toward the diploma table. That’s when Habib stopped, reached into his pocket, dropped to one knee and opened a cherry red ring box.
His now-fiancé, Alaa’i, graduated from our School of Medicine last year and is now an internal medicine resident at UC Davis Health. Very few people knew about the plan to propose on stage, including Alaa’i’s father, who gave his blessing.
