Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, affecting more than 80 million people. At UC Davis, Dr. Anna La Torre and her team are working to change that. Their glaucoma research focuses on using stem cells to repair optic nerve damage and potentially restore vision lost to glaucoma.
In this video, Dr. La Torre explains how her lab is studying the role of mitochondria in glaucoma and developing retinal cells from stem cells to replace those damaged by the disease. While this research is still in early stages, it offers hope for new regenerative treatments for glaucoma and blindness in the future.
