Originally a licensed game by Hudson for the Sharp X-1 and NEC PC-8801 computers, Super Mario Bros. Special was unleashed onto Japan a few months before Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels. The game had some neat level designs, new enemies, including barrels, Sidestepper crabs, and Fighter Flies, plus new items, like the Wing, which was the first Mario item used for flight, the hammer, for destroying barrel enemies, the Hachibuse Bee (8000 pts.), and Lucky Star (acted as a smart bomb).
Sadly, with the neat level design, and more additions than Nintendo's own Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels, the game was rather problematic, due to lack of scrolling, and odd physics.
Fast foward almost 20 years later, fans have ported the obscure game to NES, by hacking the levels and art of the original SMB. While it lacks the new items and enemies, it's still a solid game, and dare I say the new levels, being more creative and varied, make it a better game than the original Super Mario Bros.
