To set up this glitch, you need to do moat door skip to get into the castle, and then go back out as Mario. Run up to the front door and talk to Lakitu, and then the rabbit with the key to the castle will appear.
You're supposed to only be able to catch the rabbit as Yoshi, so catching it as Mario has an odd effect: you can walk around freely while the key is coming towards you. You can do lots of silly things, such as drowning and then collecting the key while dead.
What I show here is that by triggering text just before you collect the key, you don't collect it properly, and it floats above you. Talking to a previously caught rabbit will result in a soft-lock. The game counts you as having collected the key, so you can open the front door.
This probably also works with Luigi & Wario, but I didn't check. Additionally, reading a sign just before you get the key will also trigger the glitch.
I doubt this glitch is useful for anything, but I thought it was quite interesting.
