This is the aerial tramway ride to the top of Stone Mountain in Stone Mountain Park near the town of Stone Mountain which is about thirty miles east of nearby Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Two Floridians, Herbert Fishler and D.C. Land decided to commission a Swiss company called Von Roll to built a tramway to the summit and it opened in November of 1962 at a cost of about a million (US) dollars. The then Swiss Ambassador August Lindt, dedicated the ride during the formal dedication ceremony on opening day. Sometime in the early 1990's, before the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the ride was refurbished and rerouted with the ground station called a drive station moved a little bit west and closer to the Stone Mountain Museum. A drive station is the station containing the drive motor that pushes and pulls the gondolas to the top an back. The station at the top is called a tension station which contains a set of counterweights that go down a shaft that keep a constant and steady tension on the cables. You can see the original 1960's space age station at the seven minute mark in the video just to the right of the current drive station.
