James Kalm is out and about on a Sunday afternoon in early June, dogging the neighborhood around Manhattan’s Bowery, capturing views of some shows that have recently opened.
This saunter starts at the Andrew Edlin Gallery with a view of Summer Wheat’s “Gamekeepers”. This show is a departure for the artist in that Summer presents three near six foot tall tulipiére sculptures. These pieces were fabricated with help form a ninth generation Sicilian ceramic artist and are covered with glazed pictures of updated of mythic and pop scenes of female hunters. The paintings are made using a technique developed by the painter where she paints on the back of aluminum screens and the acrylic paint is extruded through the front.
Down the block at Parasol Projects, The Poop-Up Shop provides viewers with a bit of comic relief and toilet humor (in its most inoffensive version).
Then we wind up out stroll by popping into Grimm Gallery for a look at a series of large city scapes titled “service” by London artist Caroline Walker. A musical intro is provided by Zoe Anne Kessler, this program was recorded June 3, 2018
