The most original landscape painter of the time was undoubtedly Kitty Kielland. She painted her romantic "Summer Night" in 1886 while staying with friends in Fleskum, a farm outside Oslo. A calm blue lake dominates the canvas, reflecting the colours of dusk. Distant mountains punctuate its prominence.

Kitty Kielland (also: Christine Lange Kielland, Kitty Lange Kielland) (born 8 October 1843 in Stavanger; died 1 October 1914 in Christiania) was a Norwegian painter. Together with Harriet Backer she is one of the most important representatives of Norwegian naturalism.
