The place of the meeting depicted here is difficult to make out. The masonry, however, points to a ruin. The missing brick and the overgrown bush support this assumption; furthermore, the edge of a stone bench in the left edge of the picture is broken off. Johann Friedrich Overbeck, born in 1789 in the year of the revolution as the son of the mayor of Lübeck, completed this painting in Rome in 1828.
Johann Friedrich Overbeck (* 3 July 1789 in Lübeck; † 12 November 1869 in Rome) was a German painter, draughtsman and illustrator. He is considered the protagonist of Nazarene art, which was founded in Vienna and Rome at the beginning of the 19th century. The aim of the Nazarenes was the renewal of art in the spirit of Christianity, using old Italian and German masters as models. They influenced the art of the entire Romantic period.
