McTaggart's energetic brushwork and bold colouring convey the force of the thunderous sky, the whipping wind and the turbulent sea. Although it is possible to find similarities in Impressionist painting, his technique is essentially part of a distinct Scottish tradition.

William McTaggart was the most important Scottish landscape painter of the late 19th century. He was born within reach of the Atlantic Ocean and spent all his summers painting it. In the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh hangs what is probably his most famous painting, "The Storm", painted in 1890. The fishing boats are in distress at sea, taking on water and being blown out. But the real subject is the storm itself: land, sea, and the sky.
