The Sultan Barquq Mosque in Cairo, commissioned by Sultan al-Zahir Barquq, was originally completed in 1387, as a school (madrasa) for religious education. We visited the ornate iwan, which is a rectangular hall or space used for prayer. As you can see, I had a brief, but nice, encounter with a group of young Muslim women.
