Methods for cleaning and checking the serviceability of an old, dirty valve assembly. This valvetrain overhaul is part of our preparation to swap an EJ25D from a 1999 Subaru Legacy into a 1998 Subaru Forester. The EJ25D is not one of the more common (or well-regarded) engines made by Subaru, but the methods for checking and cleaning components shown in this video are applicable to many if not most other engines.
One test which was not included in the video checks the clearance between the valve stem and it's passage into the combustion chamber, because it's a finicky process that involves really small measurement which didn't record well. In all likelihood this test is not needed anyway, but if your engine shows serious signs of neglect or is known for this kind of abnormal wear, you may want to look into it.
