One of my favorite exercises I give myself when I'm composing music, and composing music for video games, is that limitations create creativity. So just as an example, you could pick three notes like C, D, and E, and you've got to compose an eight measure melody using only those three notes. Then your first thought might be, well, that's going to be boring. Well, here's where your work comes in, is your job is to create a compelling rhythm, a rhythm that is so interesting that only having three notes still creates something that is exciting to listen to. Are you up for the challenge? Go ahead and give it a shot. When you're done, pick up your copy of the new book. It's called Compose Legendary Video Game Music, for more melody exercises and to take your video game composing to the next level.
