Love game music but don't know what to learn next? Start with the free 6-Level roadmap: bestmusiccoach.com/roadmap?htrafficsource=yt&el=stuck-composers-learn-the-3-steps-to-master-video-game-music
What does form mean when it comes to video game music? Well, form is understanding the large blocks of the patterns of video game music. Now, why do we want to understand the blocks of patterns? Ah, because there's three steps to getting better at composing video game music. Number one is recognizing patterns. That's what we're talking about right now. Number two is using those patterns. Number three is then creating your own patterns. Now, to be clear, everyone doesn't do all those in a perfect one, two, three order, but those are the three steps. And the only way you're going to have control over all three of those steps is to spend time in each one of them. And really, what you want, I'm not going to speak for you. What most people I talk to, and I help compose video game music, I'm a music teacher, by the way. I've also composed video game music, by the way, too. I'm not just teaching people to do stuff I've done. Anyway, most of them, they want control. They want artistic control. They want to be able to have a vision and make that vision come true, and then also leave room for happy accidents. Because sometimes, sometimes it's fun not to know what you're doing. Just go on a journey and create. Wandering is a tremendously valuable way of making art. And also, sometimes you have a brief that you got to stick to. You're like, okay, we're making a battle theme for this guy called Bob. And you know, Bob's got a horn coming out of his nose, and he's blue, and we've got to capture that in the music. Whatever it is, you need to be controlled in that area of creation. But the only way you get to control is by spending time in pattern recognition, pattern utilization using the pattern, and then pattern creation. There you go. If you found that useful or you want to create your own music, check out Composed Legendary Video Game Music. It's a new book. It's out on Amazon now.
