Metamorphonsen is the finest of the group of purely instrumental works that Richard Strauss wrote after his last opera, Capriccio, in the unexpected 'Indian summer' of his late 70s and early 80s. It was composed in response to a commission which he received from the conductor and patron Paul Sacher for his Zurich Collegium Musicum in the summer of 1944. When Strauss first worked on the piece, between August and October that year, it was to have been for 11 solo strings. But when he returned to it, between January and April 1945, he produced first the short score of a versionfor string septet (rediscovered in 1990, and now published and recorded), and then the full score of the final version for 23 players. He took this score with him when he left Germany for Switzerland in October 1945; Sacher conducted the first performance in Zurich in January 1946.
