I wrote this song because I really like the sound of the Avalon preamp and channel. I'm not totally a gear head, but it is difficult to play, record, mix, and master music without also having some deep love for the gear you are using. In this case, the Avalon was just an inspiration that helped me find some notes that sound good together.
This song is actually one of a two-part piece. It's brother, Slip, Hop, Slide, is not inspired by the Avalon per se, but it shares the warm, laid-back feel of Strands of Avalon.

I wrote most of this song years ago, but I never knew how to piece everything together so that the song had the right movement. This was the first song written explicitly for the purpose of making guitar rock or something purely instrumental, where the guitar carries the attention for the duration of the song. So, whats The Breaks all about? And its just an instrumental song. There are no lyrics, so it couldnt really be about anything, could it?
I think that vocals and lyrics are important, but much of the character of a song is established by drums, rhythms, instrument sounds, and melodies. For guitar instrumentals, the guitar is like a vocal. Most of my work reflects a sincere effort to try to capture intentionality, feeling, and experiences without using words. Im convinced that music can show us what words cannot. Now I am trying to convince myself that I can make music to do just that.
Heres my idea for The Breaks:
At some point in your life you have noticed a moment when everything seems to be exactly as it should. There is a sense of perfect order and fit, and your life seems to be in amazing harmony with the universe.
At other points in your life, you have felt an almost comical separation between your plans and what the universe gives you. These chaotic times, when all that you have envisioned for yourself is turned on its head, bite with brutality, marking the clearest division between your sense of belonging in the world and the world itself, with its own seeming intentions.
Isnt it cruel how we can feel so aligned at one point and entirely out of touch later? And we really have no way of knowing when we are moving in the right direction. The universe announces this only after when have moved.
That is what The Breaks is about. It is about peace and chaos. Its about being the commander of your own life, but also being the vessel moved around on the ocean. It is serenity, and it is storm. It is beautiful, and it is terrible.
