This is a quick demonstration of a clean guitar tone from a Vox solid state amplifier. Josh Scott (JHS pedals) recently released a video that represented a challenge to negative preconceptions about the tone from solid state amplifiers. I immediately thought of this Vox amp: An excellent-sounding solid state amplifier.
The amp is a Vox Cambridge 30R. The amplifier is captured by a Shure SM57. The signal is being fed into an Apollo Twin (Universal Audio / UAD). With the Apollo Twin, I am using the V76 preamp, the Fairchild Compressor, and the Galaxy Tape Echo.
When I record, I normally use the UAD Fender 55 Tweed Deluxe. As good as amp sims can be, I learned that using UAD plugins in conjunction with mic'd amplifiers (even solid state!) produces very pleasing tones suitable for recording.
The guitar used in this video is an Ernie Ball Music Man Cutlass HSS in aged buttercream.

So, whats The Breaks all about? And its just an instrumental song. There are no lyrics, so it couldnt really be about anything, could it?
I think that vocals and lyrics are important, but much of the character of a song is established by drums, rhythms, instrument sounds, and melodies. For guitar instrumentals, the guitar is like a vocal. Most of my work reflects a sincere effort to try to capture intentionality, feeling, and experiences without using words. Im convinced that music can show us what words cannot. Now I am trying to convince myself that I can make music to do just that.
Heres my idea for The Breaks:
At some point in your life you have noticed a moment when everything seems to be exactly as it should. There is a sense of perfect order and fit, and your life seems to be in amazing harmony with the universe.
At other points in your life, you have felt an almost comical separation between your plans and what the universe gives you. These chaotic times, when all that you have envisioned for yourself is turned on its head, bite with brutality, marking the clearest division between your sense of belonging in the world and the world itself, with its own seeming intentions.
Isnt it cruel how we can feel so aligned at one point and entirely out of touch later? And we really have no way of knowing when we are moving in the right direction. The universe announces this only after when have moved.
That is what The Breaks is about. It is about peace and chaos. Its about being the commander of your own life, but also being the vessel moved around on the ocean. It is serenity, and it is storm. It is beautiful, and it is terrible.
