My relationship with music has suddenly shifted from impersonal to personal. When I write and play music, I usually experience the music as coming from beyond me. It's almost as if I have no control over what I am doing, despite my ability to play notes and chords whenever I want. The onus is on me to find what the music wants. This relationship makes me feel like I am serving music, which seems more like an abstract ideal than something in the world.
That sense of music suddenly changed, and I no longer feel like I am searching for music. Instead I feel like the music is there to be used for a purpose. I can't say whether this change came from a development in skill, or whether this is merely a change in perspective. What I can say is that thinking of music as a tool rather than an ethereal force was a kind of relationship I really couldn't meaningfully imagine. Whatever the case, this change seems to have freed me up quite a bit and has left me better connected to the feeling of music and what I am trying to do.
It makes sense to me. As a kid I observed how Johnny B. Goode made people react. Rhythm and tone. Rhythm and tone. As inclined as I was to dismiss that song as I got older (it doesn't leave one speechless, desolate, disoriented, and afraid like, for example, No Quarter), I see now that the power of music is making people react. That involves feeling. It isn't the music itself, or even the intended content of the music.
In my experience, moments of perspective change are unreliable. They are often fleeting, or perhaps there is, in the moment, an overemphasis on the significance of the change. But perspective change can also be more robust. In this case, I hope it's the latter. I like this change.
This is a new song that I'm currently writing.

![Joyride // gb fusion [[Instrumental guitar]]
I wrote most of this song years ago, but I never knew how to piece everything together so that the song had the right movement. This was the first song written explicitly for the purpose of making guitar rock or something purely instrumental, where the guitar carries the attention for the duration of the song. Im happy to be able to stamp this one as complete! I hope you dig the grooves and feels!

So, whats The Breaks all about? And its just an instrumental song. There are no lyrics, so it couldnt really be about anything, could it?
I think that vocals and lyrics are important, but much of the character of a song is established by drums, rhythms, instrument sounds, and melodies. For guitar instrumentals, the guitar is like a vocal. Most of my work reflects a sincere effort to try to capture intentionality, feeling, and experiences without using words. Im convinced that music can show us what words cannot. Now I am trying to convince myself that I can make music to do just that.
Heres my idea for The Breaks:
At some point in your life you have noticed a moment when everything seems to be exactly as it should. There is a sense of perfect order and fit, and your life seems to be in amazing harmony with the universe.
At other points in your life, you have felt an almost comical separation between your plans and what the universe gives you. These chaotic times, when all that you have envisioned for yourself is turned on its head, bite with brutality, marking the clearest division between your sense of belonging in the world and the world itself, with its own seeming intentions.
Isnt it cruel how we can feel so aligned at one point and entirely out of touch later? And we really have no way of knowing when we are moving in the right direction. The universe announces this only after when have moved.
That is what The Breaks is about. It is about peace and chaos. Its about being the commander of your own life, but also being the vessel moved around on the ocean. It is serenity, and it is storm. It is beautiful, and it is terrible.
