In today's episode, the weather is absolutely MISERABLE so no point in sticking around Tula city centre and walk there...that means we're up for an adventure!
A few kilometres out of Tula is Yasnaya Polyana (Π―ΜΡΠ½Π°Ρ ΠΠΎΠ»ΡΜΠ½Π°), famous all over Russia and the world for one reason only: the notorious Russian author Lev Tolstoj, capable of publishing masterpieces such as Anna Karenina and War and Peace, lived there.
He didn't just live there, but he actually was born in it indeed, and his grave can now be found inside the museum. The museum, which I was able to visit in this episode, consists of an excursion around the park, although entering the buildings inside the park require some sort of private guide.
After checking out of the hotel where I spent the night in Tula, I went directly to Prospekt Lenina (Lenin Avenue), the main street of Tula. There a bus stop was awaiting me with different busses passing by every minute. I didn't have to wait for long before a dodgy minibus who had surely seen better days stopped and showed a big sign on the side. "117K" was written in quite a large size, followed by a series of toponyms, all of them completely foreign to me but one: around the half of the list I was able to clearly read "Yasnaya Polyana".
The minibus was a typical Russian marshrutka: tiny, uncomfortable, hot and sweaty. The window panes started fogging up quite soon, and I was able to rely only on the driver to shout to me when we arrived at my destination in Yasnaya Polyana. Upon getting off the bus, however, I quickly realised I was nowhere near my actual final destination, that being the Tolstoj museum. The bus stop was absolutely in the middle of nowhere, in a narrow provincial road a few kilometres from Tula. By the way, the bus fare was 30 rubles.
I had to some walking before finally arriving at the gates of the Tolstoj museum, consisting on a few buildings scattered around a huge park. I decided to pay the 100 rubles for the ticket to walk around the park. I didn't stay for long, but I could see that the nature that was so much of a protagonist in the Tolstoj residence was the same one whose features Tolstoj had been so keen in representing with his words. The epitome of Russian nature...fascinating.
Provincial Russia just has so many hidden gems! π
