Today I'm venturing into one of the most dangerous areas of Moscow. One of those that, allegedly, you need to 100% avoid if you ever plan of visit Russia as a tourist! Not that there is any reason for tourists to actually go there...
Western Biryulyovo is the only district of Moscow with no metro station. The layout of the district is quite singular as well: the entire district is enclosed between railway platforms and a highway. That is also why most residents in Western Biryulyovo actually don't want a metro station: they can get by just fine with the railway station on the edge of the city, which reaches Paveletskaya railwa station in the heart of the city in just 20 minutes or so. From there they can easily change to the metro and go everywhere in Moscow.
Western Biryulyovo also made the news in the West due to unfortunate events occurring there in 2013. A Biryulyovo resident of Russian ethnicity was allegedly killed by a migrant of Central Asian origins. As the Moscow authorities were slow in bringing investigations to a successful conclusion, riots and protests broke out and lasted for about a month, with most streets around Biryulyovo being blocked by ferocious Russians.
What I found walking the streets of Biryulyovo, however, was not anything like what I had read about it while doing my usual research for this video. Actually, this neighbourhood looked finer than most places I had ever been to around the world. One could argue that the safest areas of Paris and London are more dangerous than the most dangerous hood of Moscow. What can I say?
The architecture might be a bit over the top and is definitely reminiscent of the Soviet times, but the area, instead of looking rough and grey as I was expecting, looked absolutely nice, and actually a lovely place to go for a walk even! I was surprised.
The sun was surely helping in that aspect. Maybe, if it had been raining or if it had been a cloudy day, I wouldn't have had the same impression. But then again, if it had been raining I probably wouldn't have even ventured into the most dangerous part of Moscow!
There was also a nice park in the middle of the area, where many mothers and kids were casually walking around. What is NOT to like about Biryulyovo?
