Out of nearly 440 folks sent into space, only 18 didn't make it back, and just three of them, the Soyuz 11 crew, died more than 50 miles above Earth.The Soyuz 11 was a Russian spaceship that launched in 1971. It was the only mission to ever visit the first space station, Salyut 1. The crew set a world record for spending 22 days in space, which was later broken by an American mission called "Skylab 2."The mission had some problems, like a fire and strange vibrations, but it went pretty well until it was time to come back to Earth.Sadly, right after leaving the space station, the three crew members suffocated. This happened because of a small mistake – they opened two bolts at the same time, which caused too much pressure and damaged the spaceship's pressure valve.The pressure inside the spaceship dropped to zero in just three and a half minutes. The spaceship landed in a remote part of Kazakhstan, and a team found the lifeless bodies of the crew members.To remember them, the Russian government built a big black monument at the exact spot where the Soyuz 11 landed. It has three sides, each with a picture of one of the crew members. They made it in 1973 to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for space exploration.Sadly, this monument only lasted for 39 years. In 2012, it was damaged by some visitors. Now, a smaller monument with an inscription honors the crew's achievement.The best way to keep the memory of the Soyuz 11 crew alive is in the hearts and minds of those who remember their sacrifice as we keep exploring space.

I Almost Died On A Space Mission In Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 Dave The Inspiration 2022-12-22 | When the Soyuz 11 spacecraft was reentering the Earth's atmosphere after taking Soviet cosmonauts to the first world's space station, the cabin depressurised resulting in the death of all three members of the crew. To this day, the Soyuz 11 members were the only three astronauts to ever die in space.In the middle of the Kazakh desert, a memorial was erected in the exact place where Soyuz 11 landed. The area is essentially lawless, undeveloped, barely populated, and unbelievably remote. Just getting to either terminus at Magadan or Yakutsk is an adventure in itself - travelling along the road makes this look like buying a bus fare in comparison. Every year dozens of people die in the region from drowning, freezing, car accidents, starvation, tick-borne encephalitis, alcohol poisoning, fires, crime, wild animals, or just disappear.Follow me on Instagram at @davelegenda.Construction of the Kolyma Highway was ordered by Stalin in 1932. Construction was to be carried out by the slaves and political prisoners of the many gulags scattered around the region of the Kolyma. That is how Ust-Nera was originally founded in 1935 - it was to be a settlement for the prisoners and the people involved in the construction of the road from Yakutsk to Magadan.You will hear it confirmed in the video that it was indeed the prisoners of the gulag who built this road. The road is treated as a memorial, as the bones of the estimated 250,000–1,000,000 victims who died while constructing it were laid beneath or around the road. As the road is built on permafrost, interment into the fabric of the road was deemed more practical than digging new holes to bury the bodies of the dead. This is why the Kolyma Highway has now the very creepy honour of being colloquially referred to as "The Road of Bones". This is the news piece that one of the guys that I met on the minitaxi was telling me about at some point in the video.After 96 straight hours on a Russian train to get to Yakutsk and another 22 hours on an old Soviet bus to get to Oymyakon, I needed to keep going. Ust-Nera is a gold mining town of about 17000 people located at the confluence of the Nera and Indigirka rivers. Though subjected to freezing winters and boiling summers, the town does not lack spirit or location. In particular, it is surrounded by tall craggy mountains, some glaciers, endless taiga.Further onwards from Ust-Nera there was only one plausible direction that I could have taken - and that was going eastwards, towards the direction of the mining town of Susuman first, and Magadan second.Patreon!

Why people would want to travel to the coldest place in the world?Because it's just fascinating. Like in Oymyakon is so different from anything we're ever been used to.The town of Oymyakon is located between two mountain ranges causing the wind to focus directly onto the town. As a result, Oymyakon sees the lowest average winter temperature in the world, outside of Antarctica. Since there is no permanent population in Antarctica, Oymyakon holds the record of being the coldest permanently inhabited settlement in the world. Hats off to Oymyakon!The lowest temperature ever recorded in Oymyakon was -71.2 °C, which is commemorated with a monument on the main (and only) square at the centre of the town of Oymyakon. That is, however, an unofficial reading. On 6 February 1933, a temperature of −67.7 °C (−89.9 °F) was recorded at Oymyakon's weather station - this was the coldest officially recorded temperature in the Northern Hemisphere.Only Antarctica has recorded lower official temperatures (the lowest being −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F), recorded at Vostok Station on 21 July 1983). It was the residence of the Central Spiritual Board of Buddhists of the USSR and later of the Pandido Khambo lama, the head of the Russian Buddhists.Unique samples of old Buryat art, such as sculptures and ritual objects are gathered and preserved at the Ivolginsky datsan. Among the monastery's treasures there is a collection of old Buddhist manuscripts written in Tibetan language on natural silk.As a cultural and religious monument, the Datsan is protected by the State. The Datsan Centre consists of such temples as Sockshin-dugan, Maidrin-sume, Devazhin and Sakhiusan-sume. There are also a library, a hotel, two buildings of the faculty of philosophy of the Buryat University, Museum of Buryat Art and the rest are residential buildings of the Russian lamas.

Stay tuned to find out!If there is one place that even the most hardcore travellers dream of visiting,that is Magadan.The city with one of the darkest histories in the world is located in the deepest corner of the Far East of Russia, in a position that is so remote that even the most experienced adventurers have often had to give up mid-mission while en route to Magadan.While nowadays there are more-or-less comfortable flights from Moscow to Magadan, I decided to take a two-week holiday in the middle of winter to do something special: I decided to travel to Magadan by land, crossing the entirety of Siberia.However, traveling all the way from Moscow to Magadan by land would have taken far more than two weeks, so I decided to jump on a plane first and start my journey from Irkutsk, the legendary Siberian city closest to Lake Baykal.When I was a kid, I remember reading a blog post about a random guy claiming that the ice of Lake Baykal was the most transparent in the world. I even remember seeing some pictures on that blog post, but I thought for sure they were photoshopped.In my mission to traverse the 5 thousand kilometres between Irkutsk and Magadan only by train or bus, I set out a goal for the first day to visit Lake Baykal and finally find out whether the folkloristic myths about the transparent ice of Baykal were true or not.

However, the plant was only constructed to resist earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 7.dditionally, it was put in operation from the start without containing structures - it is actually one of five the last five first-generation water-moderated Soviet-era reactors without a containing structure in case of radiation leaks - which is a requirement for all modern nuclear plants.Armenia is a country at war. The borders with two of its neighbours - Turkey and Azerbaijan - are closed permanently. With frequent periods of energy scarcity and with no chance of receiving resources from neighbouring countries, the Armenian government has simply got no chance. The nuclear power plant of Metsamor is here to stay.Life in the town closest to the plant goes on as normal, with little thought about the risk of potential nuclear disaster.

Today, it's Armenia time!At 11:41 on the 7th December 1988, an earthquake struck northern Armenia killing between 25,000 and 50,000, and injuring up to 130,000 people. The quake lasted just 20 seconds, but the dust cleared to scenes of utter devastation. Armenia was then part of the Soviet Union, and most residential buildings in the region were shoddy Soviet-era apartment blocks that crumpled into piles of rubble.Since I was in Yerevan, I decided to go a bus stop and find a marshrutka to the second largest city of Armenia, Gyumri. Gyumri was the city closest to the epicentre of the 1988 earthquake and it is yet to recover from that devastating disaster. Many quake-damaged buildings are still easily recognisable on the street, and its population currently sits at 114,000 people, down from a peak of 230,000 before the earthquake.The shock occurred on a chilly Wednesday of December, when most workers and schoolchildren were inside. Many of the clocks around the city froze at the moment the earthquake struck. It was a radical event that defined the future of Gyumri for many years to come.Of the 78 high-rise apartment blocks in the city, that were built when Gyumri was known as Leninakan, during Soviet times, just six survived the quake. Most of the buildings erected during the imperial era were instead able to withstand the devastating effects of the earthquake.The official communist party newspaper Pravda said that poor construction, like other issues of neglect in the Soviet system, could be blamed on the period of stagnation that began with Leonid Brezhnev. Most Soviet buildings were engineered to resist magnitudes between 4 and 5, but this one was of course 6.8.Don’t get me wrong, reconstruction works have been underway throughout the years, at least in the centre of Gyumri. It’s the outskirts of town that have been mostly neglected, as reconstruction was hampered by the critical economic situation of the city following the earthquake of 1988. Unemployment still runs rampant in the city, with 90% of households having their men working in Russia.As the town was almost levelled, some 150,000 survivors were left homeless in the mountainous north of Armenia just as winter was approaching. As foreign aid descended on Armenia, Gyumri's airport, which usually received around four arrivals per day at the time, was soon fielding as many as 180.

Especially Birobidzhan- a city so far from where I was born and grew up, with such a fascinating history. 😊As I found myself in Khabarovsk, in the very Far East of Russia, I had the perfect chance to go and visit the Jewish Autonomous Oblast by simply jumping on a two-hour train ride across the Far East of Russia 🔥🔥🔥The Jewish Autonomous Oblast is the only autonomous oblast in the entirety of Russia. Even more curiously, the Jewish Autonomous Oblast is the only federal subject in Russia where Yiddish is an official language.It was set up by Stalin in 1934 as part of a policy to provide minority nationalities within the Soviet Union with territories in which they could be free to pursue their cultural heritage. The Jewish population of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the Soviet Union peaked at around 45,000 to 50,000 Jews in 1948. After that, due to the harsh climate of the Russian Far East, the majority of the Jewish population in and around Birobidzhan started emigrating to Israel and other destinations. Nowadays, Jews constitute less than 2% of the local population in the Jewish Autonomous Oblast.Birobidzhan is very much often one of the stops on the traditional route of the transiberian. Although trains do not stop here for long, you're always pretty much guaranteed to pass through via Birobidzhan if you will ever be on a train traveling from Moscow to Vladivostok, on the Pacific Ocean.Please consider subscribing to support this channel.
