In this episode, Lisa and McFinn are joined by Dr. Merit Cudkowicz who has over 25+ years working in ALS. Dr. Cudkowicz is the Chief of the Massachusetts General Hospital Neurology Service, Director, Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Julieanne Dorn Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
We will take you through Dr. Cudkowicz’s work in ALS as she feels this is not a job for her but a community that works together to solve ALS. She talks of the HEALEY Platform Trial that is working to control, prevent and cure ALS, providing a “cocktail” of treatments for those diagnosed with ALS. She discusses some of the challenges in ALS, like the need for biologic tools (biomarkers and imagining) to know if people are responding to treatment in a short time. She talks about the future of ALS, making this a manageable disease, repair path drugs in 2022 and early intervention. After watching this, you will see why Dr. Merit is known as the “godmother of ALS”.
