“Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” (1964) happens to be one of the craziest ideas ever put on celluloid. “Frankenstein Conquers the World” (1965) was a successful film at the box-office in Japan, but it didn’t make a lot of money as “King Kong vs. Godzilla” (1962). However, this made Baragon become popular among the kaiju community. He has gained a strong following since his Frankenstein battle. Over the years, before making a cameo appearance in such anime like “Urusei Yatsura” and “Dragon Ball” he got caricatured and lampooned in all sorts of media in Japan. For instance, in the manga, “Kaibutsukun” there was a character modeled after Baragon called Nombilas. He appeared in a story where he met Franken and there was production for a movie called “Franken vs. Gabegebo”. This story was adapted in the anime in both the 60s black and white version and the 80s color version. Here, in this film you are going to watch, the monster is modeled after Baragon. And like “Frankenstein Conquers the World”, he appears as a villain. He fought Frankenstein in 1968, now he will fight Santa! Who will win.
OK, that aside, this film was made in 1968 and got released in 1970 for the Japan Expo. This was made for promoting exchanges with foreign countries and letting the world know about Japan, and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO or JETO). This was introduces the Japanese toy industry to the world. The art is done by Iinuma Sawako, the animation is done by Nasu Masayo, and the live-action was done by Fukui Hisahiko and Nozaki Yoshihiko.
This concludes season nine of “Stop-Motion Rarities”. Sorry about that, but upon finding this, since this is December, a change of plan was made.
