Today I spoke with Bethany Leger, who grew up as a Jehovah's Witness but ultimately deconverted as the truth claims of the JWs and other forms of Christianity fell apart.
We touched on many topics, including:
• Being urged, from the earliest days to commit her entire life to the Watchtower's authority.
• Seeing how JWs trap young believers through baptism followed by the threat of extreme shunning if they ever leave.
• Experiencing severely conditional love from JWs, including family.
• Facing intense nonstop legalism that requires total obedience or else the outcome of Armageddon and annihilation.
• Being told that she and all the other JWs were happy, yet in reality seeing the church full of unhappy, unhealthy, miserable people.
• Finding her doubts getting louder and being unable to suppress the cognitive dissonance as she realized she was being manipulated and systematically brainwashed.
• Hearing the church leaders publicly blame and shame people struggling with depression.
• Starting to do an in-depth investigation of the JWs and clearly seeing their cult traits and tactics.
• No longer being willing to pretend she believed or was happy as a JW.
• Realizing that JWs run the organization by fear, obligation, and guilt.
• Escaping the cult, being discarded by them, and facing long-term shunning.
• Reclaiming her identity and working to end the practice of shunning.
