Getting the layers ready for the cold! Here is how we winter-proof our pasture tractors using materials we already have on the farm.
Winter is coming to Sheraton Park Farms, and that means our egg-laying flock needs a warm, wind-proof mobile home. In today’s video, we are repurposing one of our standard Suscovich meat bird tractors and converting it into a cozy winter coop for our layers.
We believe in being resourceful, so instead of buying expensive insulation, we are using a "farm hack" involving cardboard and recycled chicken feed bags to wind-block the tractor walls.
In this video, we cover:
• The Insulation Method: How to layer cardboard and feed bags to stop drafts.
• Roosting Bars: Installing sturdy bars for the hens to sleep off the ground.
• Nest Box Prep: preparing the frame to accept a new roll-away nest box.
• Winter Management: Tips for keeping mobile coops functional in the cold.
If you are looking for a low-cost way to keep your chickens warm this winter, this build is for you!
