The Stony Brook Provost’s Lecture Series features talks by the university's SUNY Distinguished Academy faculty, highlighting their areas of deep expertise. Dr. Patricia Coyle delivered a talk titled "Are We Solving the Puzzle of Multiple Sclerosis?" on Tuesday, February 10th, 2026. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the major acquired neurologic disease of young adults. It appears to be on the rise. MS has many unusual features, including great variability between affected individuals. Although MS is a wonderful success story, with many available disease modifying therapies to minimize damage to the central nervous system, it is important to diagnose and treat early. In her talk, Coyle discusses our new thinking and approaches to this important disease.
