Stone Mountain is a quartz dome-shaped inselberg (isolated rock-hill AKA monadnock). Its north face features the largest bas-relief carving in the world - 158 by 76 feet, recessed 42 feet into the mountain - of confederates Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Thomas Jackson (left to right) on their horses, Blackjack, Traveler, and Little Sorrel, respectively.
While Stone Mountain is the most-visited site in Georgia, it is not without its controversy. In addition to featuring the busts of controversial figures, it was the site of the founding of the second klu klux klan in 1915, and purchased by Georgia as a confederate memorial. It opened April 14, 1965 - 100 years to the day of Lincoln's assassination.
Despite the controversial past of the site, people of all races come together to enjoy the laser light show put on each Summer night and the other special events that Stone Mountain Park puts on each year. Hiking the 1,686 feet from sea level gives you breathtaking views of gorgeous lakes, seemingly-endless forests and even downtown Atlanta (which is only 27 miles away).
