Baltimore's modern story began in 1729. It was named after Maryland founder, Cecil Calvert's, estate Baltimore Manor in Ireland. It grew around Port of Baltimore, a major hub for the exploding tobacco trade during the colonization period.Baltimore was a slave state and saw the first official casualty of the Civil War; but remained a critical part of the Union. In 1904, the Great Baltimore Fire destroyed more than 1,500 buildings in the city center, making way for an incredible revitalization of the city. Today, more than 2.8 million people call it home, making it the US's 21st most-populated city. Many legendary Americans were born here, like Frederick Douglas, Thurgood Marshall, and Nancy Pelosi.
