I wrote Stone & Clouds, Op. 8 in 2023. While visiting the extraordinary volcanic island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands (read, right now), I realized how perfectly this music reflects the landscape around me: a world of ancient lava fields, rugged volcanic stone, vast skies, and ever-changing clouds.
For that reason, I decided to create a completely new version of the video. This re-release combines a fresh rendering of the piece with a photographic journey through Lanzarote, using my own photographs taken across the island. The contrast between the dramatic volcanic terrain and the endless skies beautifully mirrors the musical ideas behind the work.
This piece starts tranquilly in the key of E-flat major (the clouds) until the trumpet enters, giving the music a sudden and powerful foundation (the stone), while the other hand explores a variety of colorful and unexpected harmonies. About halfway through, the music modulates to C major, opening up a new landscape before gradually returning to a more peaceful atmosphere. The piece ends as it began: calm, reflective, and serene.
