Today I present Elevation No. 31 from 50 Elevations by the Benedictine monk, composer and organist Dom Paul Benoit O.S.B. (1893–1979).
This beautiful miniature is a meditation on the Sanctus from Gregorian Mass VII. Benoit transforms the timeless plainchant into a warm, lyrical organ work, preserving its contemplative spirit while enriching it with his own gentle modal language. Every organists who played his music feels how very, very special it is. Because you can feel the spirituality in the music, Catholic or non Catholic, christian or non christian. This is special.
Although little known today, Dom Paul Benoit left behind a remarkable collection of liturgical organ music that deserves to be rediscovered. His 50 Elevations are filled with expressive gems, combining Gregorian tradition with the rich colours of the late Romantic organ.
This performance was recorded on the Marcussen Organ from Rotterdam, using Hauptwerk. I only used three stops: The Gambe 8, the beating Gambe 8 and a soft flute. For the pedals I used a quiet 16'coupled with the Gambe's.
