Video, vocals, laouto and santouri by Farya Faraji, additional vocals by Panagiotis Athanasiou, Kelareh Kabiri and Eleni Dimopoulos, with many thanks to Aurora Aguilar for helping out with the video.
This is probably my favourite song from the Nisiótika repertoire, the folk songs of the Aegean islands, characterised by the unmistakeable ensemble of violin, laouto, santouri, darbuka, and for half a century now, the electric bass, which I also used here, as it is now effectively a veritable part of the lived tradition.
The violin is played by my colleague Dimitris Kazanis, an expert player from Santorini who lended his amazing skills to this rendition. Stay tuned for an upcoming discussion we filmed back in April where I interview him about the specificities of Greek violon styles, a style which is very much rooted in the modal, dromos/makam background of Greek music and relies on expressive, ornate melodic articulation that operates outside the bounds of Western temperament.
This song is in Hitzaz Makam, equivalent to the Western Phrygian Dominant.
English translation:
Come out at the window
Just so I can see you a little, my dear
Come out, come out at the window
Do me this favor
Come out at the window
Just so I can see you a little, my dear
So I can tell you that I love you
Angel of my life
Open the window’s shutter
So they burst with jealousy
Come out at the window
Just so I can see you a little, my dear
Out of spite toward the neighbors
And so I may stop feeling pain
Come out at the window
Just so I can see you a little, my dear
So I can tell you that I love you
Angel of my life
