A playthrough of Activision's 1989 combat flight simulator for the NES, Stealth ATF.
I fly fifteen missions in this playthrough, playing until I get a game over. The missions loop after the eighth, so there is no ending.
Stealth ATF is a military-style combat flight sim that plunks you, a novice fighter pilot, down in the cockpit of an F-117 Nighthawk, the titular "advanced tactical fighter". After completing a quick training session, you'll be sent around the world in a series of late Cold War-era missions that'll help you climb your way through the ranks.
Each of these sorties play out the same way: after the briefing, you take off, wipe out the incoming enemy fighters with a mix of dogfighting and missile fire (and, if you clear all the enemies without taking any damage, play a bonus round), and finally, return to base to safely land the plane.
The game plays a lot like Konami's Top Gun (youtu.be/IzyDtrj-11Q), but with a greater focus on realism. The controls are extremely smooth once you get used to the feel of banking and tracking enemies jets, and the AI does a nice job at providing a challenge without making things feel too impossible. The graphics and sound are simple but effective, the music is catchy, and the entire package comes together quite nicely.
Imagineering was one of the best when it came to military-style combat sims for the NES, and Stealth ATF is my favorite of the ones they made. If you can look beyond the limitations that the 8-bit hardware places on it, you'll find a lot of fun here.

A playthrough of Nintendos 1989 puzzle game for the NES, Tetris.
This video shows both game types and all of their endings. The A-Type games begin at 0:17, and the B-Type games begin at 21:56.
(The final B-Type ending at 41:28 is especially great with its cameo appearances of all of Nintendos major mascot characters! I never wouldve pegged Samus as a cello player, nor Bowser as an accordion man.)
I dont think I need to regale anyone with the complete history of Tetris, but the NES version is notable for a couple of different reasons. It is one of the few NES games that launched after its handheld counterpart (https://youtu.be/BQwohHgrk2s), and it wasnt the first NES Tetris game to be released in America. Tengen had already produced an arguably superior version, but their cart was pulled from shelves about a month after its release. Nintendo had officially acquired the rights that Tengen *thought* were theirs to produce the game for the US console market, and Tengens rendition of the game was quickly sidelined.

But while Nintendos port of the game is, ironically enough, not as good as Ataris, it is still an excellent cart that managed to hook millions of players. The fun music, the simple yet addictive gameplay, and a boatload of cameos by classic Nintendo characters all made it the perfect game to chill with, and its vibe resonated with everybody, elementary school boys and technophobic grandmothers alike.
And does anyone else remember those crazy commercials Nintendo ran nonstop during the 1989 holiday season? Like the ones with the Russian cartoon bears and the opera singer? Hahaha, man, how times have changed.
