Starfleet spent years developing a revolutionary new starship.
And on its first big demonstration… it completely failed. This was the USS Excelsior, NX-2000 — otherwise known as “The Great Experiment.” Unlike Kirk’s Enterprise, Excelsior was equipped with an experimental Transwarp Drive, which was supposed to represent the future of Starfleet propulsion.
So when Kirk stole the Enterprise in 2285, Excelsior was sent to chase them down. Captain Styles activated the Transwarp Drive… and the ship went absolutely nowhere.
But here’s the thing. The Transwarp Drive hadn’t actually failed. Scotty had sabotaged it! Before helping Kirk steal the Enterprise, Scotty removed critical components from Excelsior’s Transwarp computer, deliberately preventing the ship from pursuing them. Starfleet’s Transwarp project would eventually disappear… but the Excelsior?
It became one of the longest-serving starship designs in Starfleet history. So the Great Experiment might have failed. But the ship it created absolutely didn’t.
