Woah! There are people wearing Glasses in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy? But why do people wear glasses in Star Trek if it’s so far in the future? In the Star Trek Universe, a medication called “Retinax V” is prescribed for people with age-related vision problems in the 23rd century. However, some are allergic to it.

Legendary James T. Kirk was once such a person. As such, he took to wearing “reading glasses” instead. These were gifted to him by Doctor Leonard McCoy on his birthday. Kirk sold them in the 20th century for currency.

Jean-Luc Picard was known to be allergic to Retinax V. He chose to wear glasses in later life, as seen in Star Trek: Picard Season 3.

In the 32nd Century, it seems some individuals like Doctor Kovich chose to wear glasses for fashion.

Holly Hunter’s Captain Ake also wears glasses, though this could be due to her being a half Human half Lanthanite. This species apparently has a taste for the older antiques in life.
