As a kid growing up in the deep south, squirrel hunting was just kind of what you did. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent looking up into the branches of a live oak for the flutter of a squirrel's tail or the out of place lump their body creates as they lay motionless atop a branch. It's been many years since I've chased squirrels but I recently got a chance to spend a day in the Ozark Mountains with Clay and Bear Newcomb, along with their treeing feist Osage chasing squirrels from the back of a mule! On this hunt I'm carrying my grandfather's Winchester Model 61 pump .22. He gave me this rifle when I was 10 and I've carried it many miles since then. After the hunt, Clay shows us how to skin and clean a squirrel and we fry up the quarters in a cast iron skillet filled with rendered bear grease.
