This is my entry for challenge one of BOIT. The task: make a video with using only ONE effect. Basic effects were allowed though. I chose velocity as my one effect because I figured this would be the effect that would suit the emotional/depressive/tragic/sentimental mood of this video the best.
Here's what the judges said:
Congrats for not only passing this round, but for also being a judge's favorite! We really loved the story you showed in your video and how convincing it was. The video itself was very powerful and emotional. We were able to feel Dean's pain as he was writing his suicide note. The voiceovers and the typing effects were the perfect touch to top off this video, especially when you did a repeat of the line of "I want to kill myself." You're chosen effect, despite not being overly noticeable, was still used really well to help slow the pacing of your entry. Overall, you did a great job this round and that is why you are moving on!

I decided to do an emotional storyline video and concentrated in particular on the AU story I was building up. I chose that kind of video because you don't need much effects in storyline videos in general. I think that the little effects that are used should suit and support the story you want to tell and not dominate it so that was the reason why I picked that genre. (I hope you get what I'm trying to say... xD) Please ignore that occasionally some of the pictures are „crossing the line". I was limited to the clips I had and mirroring the images would have been considered as a special effect so I couldn't use it.
When I first read the instructions of the challenge I was a bit unsure of what effects are allowed and which are considered „special". I'm not using Sony Vegas as the majority does so I hope I got it right. Here are the basic fx I used: black-and-white, brightness and contrast, sharpen, dissolve, fade to black and zoom. The static and the flashing colour in the clips at the end was already in the footage of the show so I guess those effects are legal for me to use. At least I hope so... xD
By the way: I always considered myself a „basic"-vidder who doesn't use much effects but when I started to edit this I realized HOW many effects I'm actually using on a daily basis... Let me tell you... this round was really a challenge and a real eye-opener!
This video was inspired by the opening of the movie „Veronika decides to die". If you like slow and melancholic movies you really should check it out.
