In this video you will learn how to splice a thimble into a rope. This method uses the professional eye splice technique, which it the preferred way by Brion Toss form his book the Rigging Handbook.
Update by a commenter: When you are un-laying the working end to the seizing (red), which amounts to the working (tucking strands) end, you should un-lay the tucking strands into “ribbons”, so they can all bear a flat load on all the tucking strands.
One of the main purposes of splicing a rope around a thimble, is to help protect the rope from from wear and abrasion. A thimble also maintains the shape of the eye and helps to distribute the load better around the splice eye. A good example of when a thimble is needed to protect the eye of a rope is; if the rope is constantly used in conjunction with a shackle, then a rope with a spliced thimble will be better protected from the abrasion that a shackle may cause.
