Happy November! While it's after Samhain now (in the northern hemisphere), the topic of sacrifice is something that many of us might consider around harvest time each year. This topic, of how the spiritual concept of "sacrifice" applies to a modern path or if it does at all, is something that comes up every so often when you identify as a Pagan or a Witch, because as I mention in the video, there are definitely some stereotypes involving it. This video in particular is just a culmination of thoughts from this season in particular. I fully expect that these ideas will continue to evolve over the years, especially if I do learn more specifics at some point. XD
For those interested, here are a few definitions that come up when you google "sacrifice definition"...
Merriam-Webster Dictionary " : the act of giving up something that you want to keep especially in order to get or do something else or to help someone. : an act of killing a person or animal in a religious ceremony as an offering to please a god. : a person or animal that is killed in a sacrifice. "
Vocabulary.com notes, "Though no longer used only in a religious context, sacrifice comes from the Latin /sacra/ and /facere/, meaning 'to perform sacred rites.' " [I added the / to denote where they have italic font.]
Dictionary .com " : the offering of animal, plant, or human life or of some material possession to a deity, as in propitiation or homage. : the person, animal, or thing so offered. : the surrender or destruction of something prized or desirable for the sake of something considered as having a higher or more pressing claim. "
So the definitions do generally mention the killing of something as an offering to gods, and also the giving up of something precious, usually for the purpose of obtaining something greater when all is said and done.
