In 1985, four guys got bored in a recording studio and accidentally invented a genre.
Stormtroopers of Death wasn't supposed to be a real band. It started as a cartoon character Scott Ian had been sketching on tour, an over-the-top, satirical military figure named Sargent D. It turned into a 63-song demo tape recorded under the name Crab Society North. And then it turned into Speak English or Die, one of the most controversial, most banned, and most influential albums in the history of heavy music.
Written, recorded, and mixed in three days. Distributed by almost nobody. Heard by everybody.
In this video we cover the full story: how S.O.D. formed out of studio boredom during the Spreading the Disease sessions, how Billy Milano went from roadie to frontman overnight, why major labels refused to touch the album, and why the controversy surrounding the lyrics is more complicated than a simple yes or no answer. We also dig into the musical legacy, the invention of crossover thrash, the birth of the breakdown, the influence on grindcore, and how "March of the S.O.D." ended up as the opening theme for MTV's Headbangers Ball.
And at the end, what all of this meant for Anthrax. Because S.O.D. didn't just blow off steam. It changed everything about what came next.
