Before Slayer: Paul Bostaph’s Final Forbidden Album
In the second episode of my Forbidden series, we take a look at Twisted into Form, the band's 1990 sophomore album and the final Forbidden record to feature drummer Paul Bostaph before he joined Slayer.
After the raw and aggressive attack of Forbidden Evil, the band took a different approach on Twisted into Form. With Tim Calvert replacing guitarist Glen Alvelais, Forbidden expanded their sound with more melodic and progressive songwriting, acoustic interludes, intricate guitar work, longer arrangements, and cleaner production.
But did this evolution make the album better?
In this episode, we'll look at how Twisted into Form changed Forbidden's sound, how fans reacted to the band's more polished and progressive direction, and how the "Step by Step" video helped give the band exposure through MTV and Headbangers Ball.
We'll also look at the end of this lineup and the departure of Paul Bostaph, who would go on to join Slayer in 1992. After Twisted into Form, Forbidden would take a break before eventually returning with 1994's Distortion.
Was Twisted into Form an underrated technical thrash classic or did Forbidden lose some of the raw energy that made their debut so special?
