Before Jason Newsted became the bassist for Metallica, he helped build one of thrash metal's most overlooked bands. In this first episode of my new Flotsam and Jetsam series, we go back to the beginning to explore the band's formation in Phoenix, Arizona, the lineup changes that shaped their sound, and the incredible story of how a 17-year-old guitarist joined the band after a two-minute audition.
We'll also look at how the song "I Live You Die" caught the attention of Metal Blade Records, leading to a record deal and the release of their classic 1986 debut album, Doomsday for the Deceiver. Finally, we'll cover the events that led Jason Newsted to leave Flotsam and Jetsam for Metallica following the tragic death of Cliff Burton and how his departure almost derailed the band before they found a way to carry on.
