Mother tongues among indigenous communities throughout the world are rapidly disappearing. At the same time, mastery of the official language of instruction is essential. The resulting linguistic situation is often complex and challenging. Thanks to interviews with the Educación Intercultural Bilingüe (DNEIB) Department of the Ministry of Education of Panama, this video provides a window into the fragile, complex, linguistic situation among the seven indigenous pueblos originarios of Panama.
Through interactive audio instruction programs, DNEIB and EDC support the goal of preserving indigenous languages in Panama while also promoting language and literacy skills in Spanish. These programs are designed to teach oral language skills through songs, games and dramas.
