Southern Pacific 4449 was restored for operation on the American Freedom Train from 1975 to 1976, after 16 years on display at Oaks Park in Portland, OR. After a cross-country steam excursion operated by Amtrak ending in May of 1977, the 4449 would go into storage. 4 years later the engine was called again, to head an excursion train sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. The trip from Portland, OR westbound to Sacramento, CA was for the grand opening of the California State Railroad Museum, and an event called Railfair '81, which was the first event of its kind in the United States in 32 years. This would be the first time since its restoration that the 4449 would operate in its original Southern Pacific Daylight colors.
Following the festivities at Railfair '81 , the 4449 would head south to Los Angeles via Tehachapi, and after a brief display at LAUPT, would begin her return trip from Southern California via the Coast Line. Once in the Oakland the 4449 would again be on the point of its excursion consist for the rest the run back to Portland.
Unfortunately the 4449 would not be able to make it all the way to Portland with its excursion. In Klamath Falls, OR the engine developed a leak in one of its flues while idling in the depot. To make repairs the fire had to be dropped on the GS4. The excursion was hauled to Portland with diesels power, and the 4449 would arrive home on the point of a short freight train 2 days later.
This 8mm and Super 8mm movies come from the cameras of, 6 different railfans, a small portion of much larger crowd. Witnessing the historic first running since the end of steam, of a GS4 in Daylight colors.

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad operates on the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroads Royal Gorge Route alongside the Arkansas River from Canon City and Palmdale, Colorado. Operating straight through the gorge and alongside the river, its an incredibly scenic ride.
Locomotives featured are GP40s 728 and 3104 leading an impressive full size passenger train of coach, lounge, open air car, and four full length domes that guide passengers through the scenic gorge.

Nestled in Nevada City, CA in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum. Founded in 2003, this fascinating museum is dedicated to the preservation of one of California’s most famous narrow gauge railroads, the Nevada County Narrow Gauge, which ran from 1876 until its abandonment in 1942.
A variety of narrow gauge equipment can be seen operating up and down the museum’s line out of the Nevada City depot, including Railbus 97 “Donna Jeanne”, and privately owned Antelope and Western Porter 0-4-0T 1. The crown jewel of the collection is newly restored NCNG 5, an 1875 Baldwin 2-6-0, making its first public runs in Nevada City following its debut at the Great Western Steam Up in July 2022.
In addition to NCNG rolling stock, there is also equipment from the West Side Lumber and Southern Pacific to help interpret the story of 3-foot gauge railroading and the importance it once had in the state of California. Most impressive is the line back up to the museum, which reaches 7% just before the Nevada City Depot. You will find the volunteers at the museum to be a dedicated, passionate group of people, making amazing things happen at this gem in the Sierra Foothills.

The Indiana Rail Experience brings big steam to the little towns of the Indiana Northeastern Railroad with Nickel Plate Road no. 765, and for one Saturday in August, the experience was brought to South Milford, Ind. Coinciding with the rededication of a memorial honoring local veterans, short-but-scenic excursions with the fan-favorite engine were offered as an additional salute to those who served.

Steam trains are an icon of another era. Hollywood and pop culture often remember them as the iron giants that tamed the west. The steam engines of the 1800s built America, tamed the west, bettered the stagecoach and canal, and inspired generations. These small (in relation to their 20th century counter-parts) tea-kettles roamed the rails coast to coast, in every town, big and small, across the Great Plaines, through the dense woods of the Appalachians, the staggering heights of the Rockies, along the rocky coast of Maine, all the way to the golden coast of California - these were a vital part of the industrial revolution and the everyday life in the Victorian age. Watch in this 40 minute program as 5 of these 19th century giants still roam the rails in the 21st century. Out of place, but somehow, still timeless.
