Long Island Railroad G5 4-6-0 39 was built in 1929 by the Juniata Shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona, Pennsylvania. It served on the LIRR until 1955, when it was retired following the LIRR's End of Steam event.
Now in 2025, the 39 has a chance to steam again. Currently being stored at the Strasburg Rail Road, the Railroad Museum of Long Island is in a contract with the SRC to bring the locomotive back to steam in the state it was built in.

The Indiana Rail Experience brings big steam to the little towns of the Indiana Northeastern Railroad with Nickel Plate Road no. 765, and for one Saturday in August, the experience was brought to South Milford, Ind. Coinciding with the rededication of a memorial honoring local veterans, short-but-scenic excursions with the fan-favorite engine were offered as an additional salute to those who served.

These small (in relation to their 20th century counter-parts) tea-kettles roamed the rails coast to coast, in every town, big and small, across the Great Plaines, through the dense woods of the Appalachians, the staggering heights of the Rockies, along the rocky coast of Maine, all the way to the golden coast of California - these were a vital part of the industrial revolution and the everyday life in the Victorian age. Watch in this 40 minute program as 5 of these 19th century giants still roam the rails in the 21st century. Out of place, but somehow, still timeless.
