Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum doubleheaded Summerville Steam Special featuring 4501 and 630. This trip marks the end of the 2024 steam season for the Chattanooga operation.
On this trip from Chattanooga to Summerville, Georgia is the operation of both of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum's steam locomotives. Both are veterans of the Southern Railway's freight operations and steam program.
On this train is Southern Railway 2-8-2 4501, the famed excursion locomotive that started the original Southern Railway steam program back in 1966. Built in 1911, this Baldwin locomotive was the first Mikado owned by the Southern. The 4501 was used in the steam program in the famed Crescent green and gold paint scheme through 1994. The engine last operated in 1998, kept on display in freight black. Following a four year restoration, the 4501 made its return to operation in September 2014.
Added for this day's trip was 2-8-0 630, a 1904-built Alco product restored in 2011. It was operated in the original Southern steam program in the 1970s, and following a 20-year restoration by TVRM, operated again in the revived program since 2011.

The Indiana Rail Experience brings big steam to the little towns of the Indiana Northeastern Railroad with Nickel Plate Road no. 765, and for one Saturday in August, the experience was brought to South Milford, Ind. Coinciding with the rededication of a memorial honoring local veterans, short-but-scenic excursions with the fan-favorite engine were offered as an additional salute to those who served.

These small (in relation to their 20th century counter-parts) tea-kettles roamed the rails coast to coast, in every town, big and small, across the Great Plaines, through the dense woods of the Appalachians, the staggering heights of the Rockies, along the rocky coast of Maine, all the way to the golden coast of California - these were a vital part of the industrial revolution and the everyday life in the Victorian age. Watch in this 40 minute program as 5 of these 19th century giants still roam the rails in the 21st century. Out of place, but somehow, still timeless.

Norfolk & Western 4-8-0 475 leads a series of freight specials on the Strasburg Rail Road. This 1906-built Mastodon locomotive recreates traditional N&W branchline freights from sunrise to sunset.

For the first time in 34 years, former Reading Company 4-8-4 T-1 2102 and Reading & Northern 4-6-2 425 doubleheaded on an excursion steam special.
For the August 13th Iron Horse Ramble excursion, already scheduled to have Reading 2102 leading, the railroads 425 joined for an exciting day of doubleheading. With 2102 freshly restored to service earlier in 2022 after a 30-year absence, this marked the first time the two engines doubleheaded since the Blue Mountain & Reading days. The two steam engines together put on an impressive show, swiftly moving the sold-out excursion train over former Reading and CNJ trackage from Reading to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania and return.
