Debuted in 1997 by Nullsoft, Winamp gained popularity alongside the rise of MP3s. Known for its customizable interface, broad audio format support, and additional features like visualization add-ons and internet radio streaming.

In May 2024, Winamp announced the release of its source code, fulfilling this promise in September. The community can now collaborate on Winamp's development, allowing for bug fixes and new features.

However, the project is not going open source. The license prohibits distributing modified software derived from the released source code, so while the source code is public, it is not open source for other projects.
