Disruptiveness, contrast, and challenge, all fairly easy to achieve in the Vinyl Community. But when you expect the unexpected, where is left to go? Well, we did go to Bach choir music last week, and I don't know how I'd "top" that. I remember my early days in the VC, when I was made to feel niche, by people who only listen to one type of music - classic rock - while I was presenting European jazz, folklore, musique concrete, ethnomusicology, drone, post punk, dub, raï, etc... It's so easy to have tunnel vision and not realize you are in a tiny, tiny box, filled with way too much crap. And yes, that could be a metaphor for the world and its obsessions with borders, unfortunately. The saddest part is that too many supposedly influential and enlightened people here, settle for the lazy way, letting the gremlins in, enabling them, because i's more work to keep them at bay.
So how do you stay independent? How do you stay free, when there are so few moments of freedom left in your daily routine? Maybe you read some poetry? Or you simply take a chance on the outside. Am I a good source for that? Not for me to judge, but I sure try my best to provide that, with the cost that comes along. And when I say cost, i mean that in all senses. But the thing with a cost, is that you get something in return. What do you get of value in life that is easy, free and without consequences? Was freedom ever free?
OK, I understand, this is not supposed to be a philosophy graduation exam.
Only if you want it to be so.
